Rules and Directions
The MPG Challenge is a fuel efficiency competition. The competition will take place before the Green Car and Transportation Festival and is open to everyone. Entrants will travel on a predefined 24.3 mile course (see route map).

The competition will start at 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 29. The course will start from the Ipswich Middle/High School (front parking lot) that is located on Route 1A (136 High Street) approximately ¾ mile north of Ipswich town center.
Entrants should arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of their division. Cars will be dispatched at three-minute intervals. Trip computers will be reset just prior to send-off and checked by an MPG Challenge Official. Miles per gallon results will be posted prominently on the Festival Grounds. The winning entrants of the each class will be given the opportunity to display their vehicle (and winning MPG) at the festival (space permitting). Cars displayed must remain stationary during regular festival hours (noon - 5PM).

1. Toyota Prius Hybrid (including Classic model)
2. Honda Civic Hybrid
3. Honda Insight Hybrid
4. SUV Hybrids (i.e. Ford Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h, Toyota Highlander Hybrid)
5. Conventional Propulsion System (Internal Combustion Engine) Note: All cars must have a factory installed trip computer with a miles per gallon read-out.
6. SPECIAL DIVISION - MIT Vehicle Design Summit Teams

Starting Times (approximate)

Division 1: 9:30 AM
Division 2: 9:45 AM
Division 3: 10:00 AM
Division 4: 10:15 AM
Division 5: 10:30 AM

Note:
- Tire pressure should not exceed the level recommended by the manufacturer for each particular make and model of automobile.
- Tire gauges and portable air pumps will be available at the starting point.
- The MPG Challenge Officials reserve the right to check tire pressures at the end of the circuit and disqualify vehicles determined to have over-inflated tires.
- The circuit must be completed within one hour.
- The MIT Vehicle Design Summit vehicles will compete on a separate specially designed course. All of these vehicles will be displayed on the Festival Grounds.
- There is no entry fee
